A simple explanation of a holistic detox program.
The term detox is often associated with the removal of the traces of, and dependency to illegal substances and alcohol. During this process the patient or toxic individual is being cleansed of any traces of these substances. Holistic detox is based on the same principle, but when it is discussed in relation to one’s health it is typically referring to the cleansing of the intestinal system and the colon.
This cleansing involves purifying the body from toxic levels of bacteria and other organisms that have the potential to disrupt and affect the immune system. Holistic detox is a regimen that is designed to remove the toxins that exist in the body as a result of the food that is consumed. In the case of holistic detoxifying the individual is cleansed using alternative health care practices. These measures are designed to treat the body and provide relief from emotional, spiritual and physiological elements along with nutritional elements.
What we eat and the chemicals that we allow to come into our bodies along with amount of stress we have in our lives affect the overall state of our physical, mental and emotional condition. The measures that are taken during these programs are aimed at improving the overall spiritual, physical and emotional condition of an individual.
The term holistic refers to medical practices that are non-traditional and do not depend on chemicals to provide relief from ailments. In the case of holistic detox the procedures involve and depend greatly on a regimented diet. This diet may vary some from one program to another, but ultimately they are founded on the same principles.
The intent of these programs is to eliminate all chemicals and artificial ingredients that have affected the internal system. These chemicals include tobacco, alcohol, refined sugars and processed foods. The diets typically consist of and are dependent on whole grains, legumes, fruits and nuts. They also place a focus on food that has been grown without the aid of artificial fertilizers.
While there are other types of detox programs that have the basic same mission these measures are not dependent solely on organically grown foods and typically focus on treating the physical aspects and not the overall spiritual and emotional aspects that come into play as well. Holistic detox treats the entire person not just their internal organs.
Holistic detox diets are not instant miracle diets but rather carefully planned programs that focus on creating new habits, breaking old ones and redefining the individual’s lifestyle. While these programs are designed to provide improved health and mental well being, not all individuals are endorsers of this school of thought. In fact many physicians feel that the body naturally detoxifies itself and that it does not need the assistance of such diets and programs. They also warn that if an individual has a serious or prolonged medical condition that they should refrain from dramatically changing their diet without the consent of their physician.
